Chapter Thirteen

Monica tapped the notebook with her pen, the ticking of the clock over the door echoing through the library. They were getting nowhere.

“This is hopeless.” Dan leaned forward, his head in his hands, sighing loudly.

Monica, Dan, and Sam tucked away in the corner of the school library during lunchtime on Thursday, two days after the failed trip to the treatment center. They had been going over the same information for the past two weeks, to no avail.

Since Monica went to Ocean Breeze and Sam was on the Wawa schedule every night that week, Dan visited the other facility, New Beginnings, but he was even less successful than she was. Not only was he unable to speak to anyone who worked there, but the receptionist refused to even take a copy of Jane’s sketch to show around. After hearing him recount the visit, she immediately regretted sending him alone. It had been foolish to think he could handle it. Either she or Sam would need to go with him from now on. For someone so naturally abrasive, he was a surprisingly terrible liar.

Sam didn’t look up from the notebook in her hands. “Don’t be so dramatic. I thought you were supposed to be all can do and get things done and all that.”

“Why, because I’m a guy?”

“No. Because you’re a Boy Scout.” Sam laughed. “You’re not even trying to be funny. Are you?”

“We need to focus,” she reminded him. Searching for any information about Jane Doe consumed them. She and Dan lost sight of their actual research project, the one they were supposedly working on all along. They needed to get their annotated bibliography submitted by Friday, which inconveniently snuck up on them.

“I don’t understand how we have no leads! Aren’t you frustrated?” The boy complained. “It’s been over a week, and we still haven’t heard back from that detective lady. “

“It’s former detective, and of course we’re frustrated,” Sam snipped. “Stop making this about you.”

His cheeks flushed red. “I’m not. It’s about Jane one and Jane two.”

“Hey!” Monica snapped her fingers in his direction, signaling for him to stand down with Sam. “Can you please just get that summary done so we can type it up?”

“Yeah, yeah,” he mumbled, pulling out the notebook he shoved away at some point. “It’s just,” he trailed off, sounding lost. “What do we do now?”

She pushed back from the table, giving in to the distraction. “I don’t know.” She pinched between her eyes. “I guess for now we just keep trying to find out who our Jane is.”

“Should we try some of the clinics on the list?” Sam asked.

“That’s what I think. I mean, what else do we have to go on?”

“Might as well,” he perked up. “Let’s divide it up between the three of us. Do you have it with you?”

Sam arched her eyebrows at Monica. The two of them spoke at work about not sending Dan out alone. But the truth was she didn’t think any of them should be going out alone.
